Freezing Rows and Columns
Freezing locks chosen rows or columns in place so they stay visible while you scroll through the rest of your data. It is the easiest way to keep your header row on screen, and there are two ways to do it.
Method 1: Freeze from the View menu
- Click any cell in the row or column you want to freeze up to.
- Go to View > Freeze.
- Choose 1 row or 2 rows (or 1 column / 2 columns), or Up to current row / Up to current column to freeze everything above or to the left of your selection.
Method 2: Freeze by dragging the grey bars
In the top-left corner of the sheet, where the column letters and row numbers meet, you will see two thick grey lines. Drag the horizontal bar down to freeze rows, or drag the vertical bar to the right to freeze columns. It is quick once you know the handles are there.
Good to know: you cannot freeze rows or columns in the middle of a sheet. Freezing always starts from the very top row or the far-left column, so put the headers you want to keep at the top or left edge.
Merge Cells
Merging combines several cells into one, which is handy for titles and tidy headers. Select the cells you want to combine, then go to Format > Merge cells (or use the merge button on the toolbar) and choose how to merge:
- Merge all – combines every selected cell into one.
- Merge horizontally – merges each row of the selection across.
- Merge vertically – merges each column of the selection down.
Merge without losing data: when you merge, Google Sheets keeps only the value in the top-left cell and discards the rest. So if you want to combine text from several cells, join it first with a formula – for example =A2&" "&B2 or =TEXTJOIN(" ",TRUE,A2:C2) – put the result in a new cell, and only merge the spare cells once the data you need is safely stored.
